Session 1 – Murder by the Numbers (11/18/2023)

In-game – December 23, 2019

In the town of Madison, a gruesome multiple murder has occurred. Sheriff Harmony responded to a call from his deputies regarding the Thompsons, a well-regarded family living on the outskirts of town. They lived on a spacious property with chickens and had a tranquil reputation. The father, John, worked as an insurance salesman for State Farm.

When Sheriff Harmony arrived at the Thompsons’ home, he was met with a horrifying scene. The parents had been shot with a shotgun, and their teenage son, daughter, and grandpa had all been shot at close range in the face with the same weapon. To add to the complexity of the situation, the alleged killer, who had taken their own life, was found across the street at an abandoned gas station and diner.

As Sheriff Harmony arrived at the scene, he was overcome with an uneasy feeling when he discovered a blood-smeared note scrawled on the wall. Instinctively, he decided to contact Evelyn, the town’s psychic, known for her eerie abilities. He wanted to discuss the strange murders with her and get her insights.

Evelyn responded to Harmony’s call, and despite some initial skepticism, she delved into her psychic abilities to offer her perspective. She shared a vague vision of a tall man but struggled to provide more details due to the darkness of her vision.

The crime scene was gruesome, with the victims identified as John, Janet, Jared, Jill, and James Thompson. The alleged murderer’s identity remained unknown, and their condition was so deteriorated that they were labeled John Doe.

Evelyn hailed a Lyft to the murder scene, and before departing, she noticed Beanie, a young neighbor, smoking a joint outside the Thompsons’ house. They left together in the Lyft.

On the wall of the Thompsons’ home was a cryptic sequence of numbers:

11032 01009 17194 81007 19730 81520 01052 31972

As Evelyn arrived at the house, Sheriff Harmony had pulled aside other officers, and Evelyn suggested that the numbers might represent bank accounts or significant dates. Beanie, familiar with one of the numbers, pointed out that “2319” matched the house number of a professor he had corresponded with.

While Harmony and Evelyn examined the gruesome scene, Beanie inquired if any other recent deaths were associated with the numbers on the wall. Beanie also noticed that the dining table was set for five people and that there was an unused shotgun above the fireplace with a box of unopened shotgun shells beneath it. A similar shotgun was found next to the alleged murderer’s body at the diner.

They proceeded to the diner, and the mysterious numbers were written on the ground next to the body, further deepening the mystery. Evelyn attempted to communicate with the deceased but received no conclusive information.

Evelyn recalled a young man named Daniel, who worked at a geology store, and the fact that he always wore Converse shoes. The dead body wore Converse shoes, leading them to believe it might be Daniel. Beanie confirmed this based on his recognition.

Beanie remembered three Daniels from high school: Daniel Amenhet, who was a math club enthusiast; Daniel Smith, a football player; and Daniel Dinkins, who was into rodeo and cowboy music. Based on the attire, they speculated that it was Daniel Amenhet.

Beanie didn’t reveal all his knowledge about Daniel to the group, suggesting a private conversation later. Evelyn declared her need to ponder the situation further.

Both Beanie and I photographed the numbers on the wall, and Beanie began making connections to chess moves. However, he experienced a headache, possibly due to his memories of playing chess with Daniel.

Beanie searched for Daniel on Facebook and discovered his friends list. Harmony examined the deceased’s body and confirmed it was a self-inflicted gunshot.

I checked the contents of Daniel’s wallet, finding standard items, business cards, and a college mailbox number (PO Box 23).
